Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott

August 20, 1966 one of the greatest heavy metal guitar players was born.  Darrell “Diamond” Abbott as he was originally known as, was a founding member of the incredible band Pantera and later Damageplan..  Known more for the heavier thrash sub genre in metal they actually began as a “glam” band or “street metal” band later becoming the thrash metal titans they are known for.

Always known as one of the nicest people to his fan base, Dimebag would go out of his way to interact with the fans and those who were inspired by him and the music he wrote.  Songs such as “Cowboys From Hell”, “5 Minutes Alone” and “Great Southern Trendkill” are just a few of his masterpieces.  The riffs and leads he wrote have a “kick you in the face” attitude!

After Pantera called it quits Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul (drummer of Pantera) created Damageplan along with bassist Bobzilla and vocalist Pat Lachman.  They released one album which did fairly well and was respected by critics also.  Unfortunately Damageplan was short lived though.

On Decemeber 8, 2004 Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott was gunned down while playing a show in Ohio, touring with Damageplan.  The only musician or performer ever to be assassinated while doing what he loved.

Dimebag…you are missed in the hevay metal genre…and…really the entire world of music.
